Issue
The client's stores had failed an internal financial audit and were at status RED. Items were badly stored, there was no history of stock movements, no proper financial control and numerous health and safety issues.
Solution
Slow-moving, obsolete and second-hand parts were identified and moved to a newly-created archive store.
Fast-moving parts and consumables were identified and moved to new storage bins. An updated layout - using high grade pre-galvanised steel shelving - was built, and products transferred onto the new shelves in the new bins. Fast-moving parts and consumables from a separate electrical store were relocated to the new main store. A reconfigured office space was created which also released additional storage space.
A service counter and hatch were built adjacent to the office for the issuing of parts. Consumable items available on a free-issue basis were moved to the old electrical store.
To overcome health and safety issues, new long-span racking was installed to house larger items, and cantilever racking to house longer component parts and lengths of raw materials. Signage for racks, shelves and bins was installed to make finding parts quicker and more efficient.
OUTCOME
The project was completed within the agreed 16 week timescale. The audit status of the stores was raised from RED to AMBER and ultimately to GREEN.
OTHER BENEFITS
Product receipts and issues are now made efficiently, in accordance with the newly defined processes. The total inventory has been identified and accurately valued.
