Silicone Hose Assemblies
|
Platinum catalysts in Silicone Hose Assemblies are not new; in fact they have been used for decades in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries in applications such as ventilation bellows, dialysis machine seals and more recently in baby teats on feeding bottles - all areas which must not be contaminated with bi-products.
Platinum cured silicone hose assemblies have other advantages too. Having no reactionary elements with chlorine. The cross linking structure of the polymer is also created in such a way that retains a high level of tear strength and is less vulnerable to splitting or being damaged with medical fasteners.
Another key advantage to Silicone Hose Assemblies is that there is no build up of peroxide solids on the die and pin, which form the tubing in the extrusion process. This build up can lead eventually to extrudate. With the platinum cured silicone hose assemblies the absence of these solids results in a smooth extrusion of tubes, which are formed with the polished surfaces of the die and remain uninhibited by foreign matter.
The final silicone hose assembley is a noticeably different, shiny and ultra smooth tube from the first metre to the 10 thousandth metre of a production run and facilitates excellent and consistent flow characteristics. For customers using translucent tube, platinum cured silicone hose assemblies have excellent clarity and are either converted or partially converted platinum and the remaining 40% are still using peroxide - induced silicone.
Consideration to changing to platinum silicone hose assemblies must be thought through carefully. It is obviously advantageous to consider the most prominent articles such as tubing and boiler seals but it is equally important to seek out any valves and propriety components that contain silicone seals. It is often the case that machine builders find a taint issue dominated by a rogue 'O' ring in a pump valve having made exhaustive test on all other components.
It is a common misconception that platinum cured silicone hose assemblies carry a high premium on price over conventional peroxide silicones. Whilst the base platinum material is more expensive it is also faster to produce and the premiums once enjoyed by raw material suppliers are much diminished as platinum production and demand increases. It is therefore virtually irrelevant as most additional costs and where premiums are required these are minimal.
